What Our Clients Says
This review is long overdue however, I would be remiss if I didn’t write something. I had an ikea wood table top that needed to be refinished due to food having spoiled and penetrating the wood. Max was honest and upfront about the cost. He even gave me a discount which I sincerely appreciate. The ugly stain was removed and then refinished to protect my table. Would definitely recommend him. He is reliable, flexible and genuinely nice man.
Captain Max is a cherished friend and man of the highest character. He is a consummate craftsman who not only efficiently installed ceiling fan lights in our home but also fashioned the combination yellow and white gold wedding rings my wife and I are pleased to wear and about which we have gotten many compliments. I have also several times met him for lunch or dinner in Manhattan and often on those occasions got to see the exquisite work he was doing in several of the top pubs and restaurants in high end areas of Manhattan. I recall, as well, his being featured in a Village Voice article awhile back which brought out his incredible knowledge of the great variety of woods and their appropriate uses based on their differing inherent qualities and characteristics. He also loves boats and sailing and as a result has extended his craftsmanship skills into the marine realm. I have on occasion worked with him on boats including on Reid Stowe’s incredible record setting 70-foot schooner, the Anne (1,152 straight days without stop on the open sea). I do have to admit that I did find working with Captain Max to be a mixed experience as I discovered when he is on the job what a serious, hard-nosed, tough task master and SOB he can be. Larry L
Max was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive, patient with lots of questions, fair with price, and accurate in estimating the delivery of our new bookcases. We are delighted with the result and would happily hire him again for future projects.
A few years ago, Max built some great bookshelves for our apartment in NYC. Today he helped me out by installing some sliding shelves in our under-counter kitchen cabinets. He does wonderful work, and is a real pleasure to deal with. And very engaged with the upper Manhattan community.
Captain Max was referral and I could not be happier. He responded to my initial call within one day, asked appropriate questions to make sure he understood what I needed and came up with a plan. He was completely transparent with how he did his pricing and made a time to come out to my home within the week. His reliability and punctuality was only the beginning. I was so happy with the repair job that he did and I ended up asking his advice on a few other projects which led him to have to come out a second time. Again, besides the creative and attention to detail work he did, he is really pleasant to work with. I wasn’t sure how to find a solution for an area in my house, and Max thought about it, presented some ideas and really had that “mind’s eye” going. He has an easy going manner and humble way of talking. I had no idea how accomplished he is until I researched him a bit further. He has no airs about him and really enjoys what he does. He did not leave until he completed every thing that I asked. His pricing was very fair and he was as “out of the way” as he could be. He was so happy with some cold seltzer while he worked and that’s all he asked for. I am so happy that Captain Max was sent to me. His work ethic, work product and pleasant professionalism are the complete package and I happily would recommend him for any project large or small.
Captain Max was referred to me by the local lumber yard where I assume they have relationships with many carpenters, yet he was their #1 pick.
He did not disappoint. Max understood the challenges of the task – designing and installing a heavy-load-bearing shelf on a wall with questionable or unknowable integrity. He then went about the strategy and installation with the focus of an ace tactician.
The result gave me total confidence that he met the goal I had set. His bubbly presence throughout the planning and the follow-through was a welcome and unexpected bonus.
Patterson’s over-all score for professionalism is A+. He is the only such vendor, in my experience, who was on time and as quoted at every phase. A first!

Captain Max made my closet dreams come true! I have a uniquely shaped closet and wanted to turn some negative vertical space into a useable “hidden storage” area. Another craftsman turned me down and thought the project was foolish – Captain Max said my dream was his dream & got to work. He revitalised my closet and created a totally custom feature for the hidden vertical space – and installed a pre-fab Easy Closet in the rest. Thanks Captain Max!
I had a vision for a closet and some storage recesses in my apartment on the UWS but I was overwhelmed by the how and who to make it happen. A google search wasn’t really producing results of businesses who could help me. Actually, one business needed me to send pictures and measurements, only to then reject my business. A stop by Mike’s Lumber on the UWS to ask if they could recommend someone produced Captain Max’s name and number scrawled quickly on a tiny piece of paper. That turned out to be invaluable! He responded quickly and came to take a look at my projects, immediately seeing my vision and making it even better. And he has now made it come to life. He’s professional, positive, and flexible. I’m so excited about the work he did and my new storage spaces. Seeing the great results led me to ask him about some projects a little different than those and yes he can do those, too. So off we go for phase 2 of apartment greatness!
I hired Captain Max to do some decorative carpentry work in my Manhattan apartment. He worked patiently with me throughout the planning and preparation stages – reviewing designs, recommending materials, and providing all of the paperwork required by my co-op. During the project he always arrived on time and well prepared, and as a result he finished ahead of schedule. All of the work is high quality and exceeded expectations.
From our first meeting through the end of the project, Max was easy to work with. He was very responsive, usually responding to emails in minutes and never needing to be chased. He was proactive, and would contact me if I needed to do anything or if he had questions. He was also a lot of fun and kept my stress-level low. No regrets hiring Captain Max; I recommend him highly.
