I hired Captain Max to do some decorative carpentry work in my Manhattan apartment. He worked patiently with me throughout the planning and preparation stages - reviewing designs, recommending materials, and providing all of the paperwork required by my co-op. During the project he always arrived on time and well prepared, and as a result he finished ahead of schedule. All of the work is high quality and exceeded expectations.
From our first meeting through the end of the project, Max was easy to work with. He was very responsive, usually responding to emails in minutes and never needing to be chased. He was proactive, and would contact me if I needed to do anything or if he had questions. He was also a lot of fun and kept my stress-level low. No regrets hiring Captain Max; I recommend him highly.
Captain Max made my closet dreams come true! I have a uniquely shaped closet and wanted to turn some negative vertical space into a useable "hidden storage" area. Another craftsman turned me down and thought the project was foolish - Captain Max said my dream was his dream & got to work. He revitalised my closet and created a totally custom feature for the hidden vertical space - and installed a pre-fab Easy Closet in the rest. Thanks Captain Max!
I had a vision for a closet and some storage recesses in my apartment on the UWS but I was overwhelmed by the how and who to make it happen. A google search wasn't really producing results of businesses who could help me. Actually, one business needed me to send pictures and measurements, only to then reject my business. A stop by Mike's Lumber on the UWS to ask if they could recommend someone produced Captain Max's name and number scrawled quickly on a tiny piece of paper. That turned out to be invaluable! He responded quickly and came to take a look at my projects, immediately seeing my vision and making it even better. And he has now made it come to life. He's professional, positive, and flexible. I'm so excited about the work he did and my new storage spaces. Seeing the great results led me to ask him about some projects a little different than those and yes he can do those, too. So off we go for phase 2 of apartment greatness!
Captain Max was referral and I could not be happier. He responded to my initial call within one day, asked appropriate questions to make sure he understood what I needed and came up with a plan. He was completely transparent with how he did his pricing and made a time to come out to my home within the week. His reliability and punctuality was only the beginning. I was so happy with the repair job that he did and I ended up asking his advice on a few other projects which led him to have to come out a second time. Again, besides the creative and attention to detail work he did, he is really pleasant to work with. I wasn't sure how to find a solution for an area in my house, and Max thought about it, presented some ideas and really had that "mind's eye" going. He has an easy going manner and humble way of talking. I had no idea how accomplished he is until I researched him a bit further. He has no airs about him and really enjoys what he does. He did not leave until he completed every thing that I asked. His pricing was very fair and he was as "out of the way" as he could be. He was so happy with some cold seltzer while he worked and that's all he asked for. I am so happy that Captain Max was sent to me. His work ethic, work product and pleasant professionalism are the complete package and I happily would recommend him for any project large or small.
Captain Max was referred to me by the local lumber yard where I assume they have relationships with many carpenters, yet he was their #1 pick.
He did not disappoint. Max understood the challenges of the task - designing and installing a heavy-load-bearing shelf on a wall with questionable or unknowable integrity. He then went about the strategy and installation with the focus of an ace tactician.
The result gave me total confidence that he met the goal I had set. His bubbly presence throughout the planning and the follow-through was a welcome and unexpected bonus.
Patterson's over-all score for professionalism is A+. He is the only such vendor, in my experience, who was on time and as quoted at every phase. A first!

Max was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive, patient with lots of questions, fair with price, and accurate in estimating the delivery of our new bookcases. We are delighted with the result and would happily hire him again for future projects.
A few years ago, Max built some great bookshelves for our apartment in NYC. Today he helped me out by installing some sliding shelves in our under-counter kitchen cabinets. He does wonderful work, and is a real pleasure to deal with. And very engaged with the upper Manhattan community.
This review is long overdue however, I would be remiss if I didn't write something. I had an ikea wood table top that needed to be refinished due to food having spoiled and penetrating the wood. Max was honest and upfront about the cost. He even gave me a discount which I sincerely appreciate. The ugly stain was removed and then refinished to protect my table. Would definitely recommend him. He is reliable, flexible and genuinely nice man.
Captain Max is a cherished friend and man of the highest character. He is a consummate craftsman who not only efficiently installed ceiling fan lights in our home but also fashioned the combination yellow and white gold wedding rings my wife and I are pleased to wear and about which we have gotten many compliments. I have also several times met him for lunch or dinner in Manhattan and often on those occasions got to see the exquisite work he was doing in several of the top pubs and restaurants in high end areas of Manhattan. I recall, as well, his being featured in a Village Voice article awhile back which brought out his incredible knowledge of the great variety of woods and their appropriate uses based on their differing inherent qualities and characteristics. He also loves boats and sailing and as a result has extended his craftsmanship skills into the marine realm. I have on occasion worked with him on boats including on Reid Stowe's incredible record setting 70-foot schooner, the Anne (1,152 straight days without stop on the open sea). I do have to admit that I did find working with Captain Max to be a mixed experience as I discovered when he is on the job what a serious, hard-nosed, tough task master and SOB he can be. Larry L
Max is very professional and polite - and really friendly. His work is impeccable. He holds himself to very high standards and this shows in his work. I hired Max to do work in both my home and my office. He is very dependable and reliable. In my home he built me a big set of shallow steps so that I could walk out my balcony door more easily. (It was a huge step up.) It is a great design and looks like an art installation on it's own (that is what I wanted!) It is also free standing and not attached to the walls so the building had no problem. And at my request Max stained the piece with a particular type of stain for guitars that i found, so I could get the exact Cherry red color that I wanted. Gorgeous! Max also did some work in my kitchen and came up with some beautiful and innovative solutions to my having trouble fitting my new stove properly. In the process I was in the area of the Bronx where Max gets aluminum sized, so I offered to pick up the piece - and everyone that worked there from the boss to the guys on the floor to the cashier LOVED Max. They wouldn't let me go because they were telling me stories about a stand-up guy that they would trust with anything. Max's work goes beyond repairs and necessary pieces. He is an artist. He cam ego my office next and did a ton of handyman work, like tightening things and patching walls, reinforcing drawers and assembling furniture. But the best are my BIG RED STEPS!! I am looking forward to hiring Max to do many more projects - he has great suggestions. Whenever I describe a vision, he makes it happen in reality. It's like I had my dream come to life! I'm so glad I found him!
I accidentally broke our sink tile in my rental apartment, and our building super was rude and totally a rip off, so I decide to find my own handyman to do the job. I found Max and email him, got a reply within a few hours, he came in to inspect the project in a timely efficient manner, and I feel completely comfortable handling my sink with him! He is honest, polite, patient, friendly, and he helped me order the parts I need, and you feel like you can totally trust him. He end up doing an excellent job replacing our sink, I would totally hire him again & recommend him to all friend!

Max is the consummate professional! He and his team did a wonderful job in designing, building, and installing a series of built-in bookcases. Not only is the craftsmanship of the finished project of the highest standard, Max himself is responsive, friendly, and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended.
Max is a consummate professional. I ordered a kitchen table and benches that were way too big for my space and he came, picked it up and sized everything down beautifully. You would never know it was altered. He delivered it back to me sooner than expected. Terrific to work with.

Max fabricated a replacement of our custom bathroom door, including sourcing the original hardware and arranging the repair and refurbishing of the broken lock and painting and installing the new door.
From start to finish we found Max to be responsible, reasonable, and a master craftsman. We couldn't be more pleased with his work and can recommend him wholeheartedly.
Max is an extremely talented carpenter whose work has made my small apartment's storage solution grow exponentially. He listens to what you envision provides feedback and works with you to get you the solution you need and will love. He built a large linen closet which meshes well with my furnishings, He also built a desk top nook for my home office that houses all of my supplies. He is fast, friendly and reasonably priced. You will be very happy if you use the captain!!
Captain Max made a beautiful, custom loft bed and step ladder for us. I described to him what I had envisioned for the room, and he created exactly what I wanted. On installation day he and his employee were friendly, quick, efficient and professional. We now have double the living space in our bedroom which has been revolutionary! Would hire him again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend! Thank you Captain Max!
Max was an absolute lifesaver! I had no idea how few gifted wood workers there are in the NY area. I had a time crunch situation on cutting down an antique, rustic dinner table. He was a man of his word and did an utterly seamless job! It's uncanny how beautiful it looks. I will continue referring him to valued friends and using him for my jobs. #GoCaptionMax
Captain Max helped us design, build and install a beautiful custom desk/workbench for my husband. He assisted with all stages of planning and was very patient with us as we figured out exactly what we wanted. He made great recommendations for hardware and materials. He is easy to work with, highly skilled, and extremely professional. He graciously offered to come back after installation to put in a final shelf after my husband had a chance to use the desk and determine the best placement. We were very pleased with the final piece and highly recommend him. We were also delighted to support a highly skilled local craftsman here in Washington Heights.
Captain Max is a lifesaver. After another company cancelled on me at the last minute and I called him. He was working on another job across town but understood my urgency and said he would do his best to fit me in that day. A few hours later he was at my apartment! He did a great job hanging my window shades, I have a to-do list a yard long and I will use him for EVERYTHING!!! He is so easy to work with and communicate with. Don't hesitate to call him and use him for all jobs small and large that you need done. He is a treasure.
Captain Max Patterson is a GEM! Captain Max just completed a closet renovation in my studio apartment. Captain Max had great ideas and suggestions for the 12 foot, three individual section closet! Captain Max custom built and installed shelves for the office section of the closet, assembled the dresser and anchored it the wall in the second closet and installed the clothing rods in the third closet. Captain Max removed the old shelving and baseboard moulding, repaired and painted, and added new moulding and shelving. I now have a beautiful, functional, updated and amazing wall closet!
I am already planning my next project for Captain Max! Captain Max is reliable, reasonable, personable and gets the job completed as scheduled! I HIGHLY recommend Captain Max!
Capt Max saves the day! I spent at least a half year looking for someone with the skills to take on my rescue operation project after moving back to NYC with just the drawers from my antique wooden flat file. The original frame was left behind as we could not get it out the door on moving day, and probably for the better as it's 5ft x 2.5ft footprint would have taken up half the my new abode's studio/guestroom. Max magically refashioned this massive piece into a vertical format by taking the 2 full length drawers, dividing them in two to match their 4 smaller brethren, and stacking them to yield 8 highly usable drawers in a newly made framework. I was able to not lose any room space and actually gain some by placing my newly envisioned art storage cabinet in an unused closet with the doors off! He is an affable guy, good as his word, and extremely competent. Since the piece is still pretty big (in a different way) he made sure to make it something one can simply knockdown in case of another move and which made delivery a breeze. The price was fair and the workmanship topnotch.

Captain Max Patterson made custom made window boxes for my company Angelica Flowers and Events and myself and our client couldn't be any happier. his work is not only beautiful and durable, Captain Max is reliable, honest and helpful along every step of the process. he helped create exactly what i needed in such a timely manner during his very busy season. i plan on using him again and again in the future. it was a pleasure working with you Captain !
Captain Max's work is impeccable. I've had the good fortune to work with Max and have known him for over a decade. He's kind, honest and enormously talented. He's also unusually reliable. When he says the job will be done, it's done on time. He's a true craftsman.
I had hired Captain Max for one project; he did such a great job I keep hiring him for more! Max is very professional and super accommodating to my odd schedule. His work is impeccable and precise. He's also very kind and takes the time to listen to the entirety of the work I need done. He then thoughtfully provides solutions and is honest about the cost of materials and labor. I highly recommend Captain Max! I feel like I've found a go-to handyman to keep my business working top-notch!
Max just built and installed new street signage at the music school where I work. The school is land marked, and Max was knowledgeable, friendly and affordable. And best of all, the work he did is professional and beautiful. I liked working with so much, that I've hired him for another project
Captain Max was great. It was easy to communicate with him and set up an initial visit. He is friendly and knowledgeable and quoted a very reasonable price. We needed to get the attic space and bathroom wall refinished due to water damage. He did a great job and was very meticulous and thorough. I'm definitely satisfied with the result and would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman in the city.
Max has been great. We hired him for one job that he quickly took care of so we looked around our apt. at what else he could do. Since then he has refurbished my wood coffee table and it looks like new. I showed him a storage dilemma that I had in my son's room, and came up with a great and economical solution - he is currently building us a bookcase. He is very nice and qualified and creative.
